Lettering with Kriti Monga

We had two weeks of lettering taught by Kriti Monga coming all the way from India. She gave classes in lettering, typography, and calligraphy. We got to try a lot of different tools. Among them was the ice-cream stick dipped in ink. The letters below are written with one of those.

One of the assignments was to design a book cover from a comic book we chose ourselves. We could not illustrate the cover but had to base the whole design on the style of the title. I chose Art Spiegelman's Maus.

Clarity: Final assignment

The final assignment with Ed Piskor was to make a 4 page comic + a front page/poster about the story we have been working with. I did a scene from a story that would be bigger if it was in full version. The outline is drawn with a normal pencil and it is all colored in Photoshop.

Clarity with Ed piskor

So, for two weeks we had the American cartonnist, Ed Piskor giving us an awesome comic workshop. We did a lot of exercises and the final, bigger project was a really nice experience for me.

The first thing we did, related to the final project was to fill out all the circles on this sheet with characters.

The next thing was to choose four of the characters and make character designs, which we could see ourselves use in a story. I did five characters.

Next thing: Make an illustration showing some situations that could take place in the story...

Then: Make a comic strip showing a sequence from the story...

Style with Rune Ryberg

This week we have had another class of style exercise. We have been studying The American comic book artists, Mike Mignola and Jack Kirby, and had to make one page per style. The page should include two characters and a given dialogue. The class was taught by the Danish comic book artist, Rune Ryberg

Color with Cedric Babouche

We just finished our first color class, which was taught by the French artist and director, Cedric Babouche. We had to do one page with four panels and a page with one big illustration. In each frame we had to create a new kind of mood/environment, using colors.

I had a lot of fun, and got to use techniques I have never used before. I have two versions, and the whole thing is done in Photoshop.
