Web comics and branding
This week and the next we are learning how to make web comics and how to create ourself a brand. We are being taught by the Danish illustrator, Stine Spedsberg who is the creator of StineStregen - http://www.stinestregen.dk
The first days of this week we had to think of three words that we want to use for our brand. The words that we mean describes ourselves and the stories we create or want to create. I must admit that is more difficult than it sounds. My words are: Poetic, sweet and dark. These words are going to be a sort of a foundation of a story, which will be made into a webcomic that we are developing the next 8 weeks.
I am currently working on my story, which is going to be about this little woman who was born in Photoshop today...

20 Pages in two weeks
Enjoying the winter break after having spent two intense weeks working on the 20 page stories we started creating in 2013. Both of the weeks we got mentored by the American cartoonist Dean Haspiel who came all the way from New York to help us create comics.
We all had to set a goal for the two weeks and my goal was to make all my 20 pages in pencils and I did that so that felt pretty satisfying. So now I am looking forward to go back and start trying out with inking, lettering and coloring (maybe even in Photoshop). That is going to be fun, fun, fun!
My story is called "The Orange Tree" and I did the pencils in A3. I will post the entire story when it is closer to the finished version but for now I have a couple of examples of how it looks at the moment.

3 styles
This week we are experimenting with drawing styles taught by Rune Rybjerg who has a bachelor in Character animation from TAW. We have been studying 3 very different comic book artists:
Hugo Pratt -

Chris Ware -

Shigeru Mizuki -

The assignment was to make an illustration using the styles (of course, one at a time) and use a photo as reference or inspiration.
The first artist was Hugo Pratt and the photo was this:

20 Lines a day
Last week we also got the assignment to draw an A5 drawing using not more or less that 20 lines. This is an exercise that had to be done in 15 minutes every day of the week and our teacher Matt Madden has done it himself for a year.
